Hand-Painted Charger Plates

13-inch Hand-Painted Acrylic Charger Plates

It's been done before.  It's not like there aren't already hundreds of other artists out there doodling around on plates, mugs, plaques, coasters, chairs, sneakers... whatever.  But the fact is that there are tens of thousands of people who DON'T do this, and we hundred-fold artistic odd-bodies are here to do what we do for our own pleasure and the delight of all the rest of you.

Last fall, through the inspiration of a couple of other artists, the idea of doodling on charger plates got me kind of excited.  So I made eleven of them.  They were so fun! I have continued to do more of them when I need a break from working on a new painting.  Below are a sampling of eleven different patterns.  Some of them have holiday themes/scriptures on them, and some are wordless.  Let me know if there's something you like, and we can talk about doing something customized.  Each custom hand-painted plate is $25 each.  Keep in mind the following:

  • These are simple acrylic (plastic) inexpensive charger plates I hand-painted with acrylic paints.
  • Don't eat on them or serve brownies on them, etc.  They're made in China and are sold for decorative purposes only and are probably not safe for direct contact with yummy things.
  • Display it on a folding easel or hang it with a plate hanger, or prop it up on a hutch rack.
  • Each one has its own unique design; no two are alike.  They are not perfect; the charm of hand-painted things is that they are inexact, but they are lively and authentic artworks.  If you want assembly-line, machine-stamped and computer-generated, go to Home Goods or Walmart.
  • They are finished with two or three sprayed crystal clear acrylic finish coats.  Don't wash/immerse them.  Just wipe them down with a soft or slightly damp cloth.

Each design has a name, and many designs have been done in more than one color combination.  Many designs have scripture or hymn lyrics incorporated into the pattern.  You can request specific scriptures, hymns, poetry, etc. or none at all.  When inquiring about a plate or requesting one to be made for you, please refer to the name of the design and specify the color combination you prefer.

~ Crystal Snowflake ~
A six-sided, crystalline design, combining both diamond and lacy elements that go from sharp in the center to soft and flowing as they tickle the rim of the plate.  Shown in two colors.

~ The Holly and the Ivy ~
The old English Christmas carol was the inspiration for this design.  The blood-red berries in the center, surrounded by the crown of thorns represents Jesus Christ, just as they do in each verse of the carol.  The sharp, dancing holly leaves are softened by a delicate ivy halo.

~ Poinsettia Burst ~
A design reminiscent of a planter of blooming poinsettias and their leaves.  The bursting bouquet dances right up to the edge of the platter.  This popular design has been offered in several color combinations, as you can see below.

~ Wise Men from the East ~
A middle-eastern feel adorns this charger, floral and fragrant, like the gold, frankincense and myrrh brought to the infant Messiah.  The reference is Matthew's account of the foreign magi who worshiped the God-infant with gifts fit only for royalty.

~ Let Earth Receive Her King ~
A terrestrial garden exploding with the beauty of petals and leafy fronds expresses the joy of a redeemed earth in the presence of the coming King.

~ Mary's Charger ~
This design comes from Blue Fox Farm's free use patterns.
The delicate floral pattern with a base of twelve seems a fitting tribute to the willing virgin girl who would conceive and bear Immanuel, not counting the cost.  This is another popular design that has been done in more than one color combination.

A wildly spinning design, dancing with music and movement, the bold petals open to a repeated royal crown design, joyfully welcoming the King of kings and Lord of Lords.  Featured in a couple of different color combinations.

~Good Tidings of Great Joy ~

This charger is a design of eight soft-petaled "snow-blossoms." The overall feel of the pattern is like a celebratory Christmas Eve snowfall, heralding the season of joy and excitement.

A seven-armed, brilliant kaleidoscopic pattern with repeating arches and steeples reminiscent of tall church windows and cathedral spires.

~ Peacock Feathers ~
Another free use design from Blue Fox Farm.  The repeated curving lines and feathery fronds are compelling to look at but visually soft.  The reference is from Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, about the One who will rise with healing in His wings.

Blazing fire and a moon pattern burst from the center, illuminating the plate to out to the rim, where flowers open up into new growth.  A verse from the hymn, "How Firm a Foundation" encircles the outer edge.  Shown below in three color patterns.
